there are numerous border disputes in the world. among those, are the dispute between china and india and between india and pakistan, between russia and japan. the kashmir dispute is particularly dangerous. yet no one is suggesting solving any of those disputes by making up borders. under international law, border disputes are to be resolved through bilateral negotiations. the old armistice lines cannot be turned into borders by fiat. any attempt to do so would set a precedent that the major powers would not necessarily want to have.
