    I wonder why Israel is crucifying a man because he was honest enough and kind enough to get elected to the parliament. When I spoke with Dr. Dweik after his election as speaker of the parliament, he was thinking seriously about becoming the Palestinian Gandhi. Is that idea too frightening for Israel to allow? Why has Israel bought Bush's designation of anyone he doesn't like as "terrorist." Hamas is much more a peace organization than the PLO was when Israel first started talking with it: Hamas has observed a ceasefire for eighteen months--except for a very brief period after the family in Gaza was killed on the beach by Israeli artillery. Does Israel prefer a weak government that can't stop suicide bombers? Or does it want to talk to Hamas, which can enforce a good peace? The Pirkei Avoth says: Who is mighty? He who turns a foe into a friend. I'm afraid Israel is now turning a potential friend into a foe. Why?
