Doublethink is: "The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them. ... To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies" - George Orwell, "1984" Akiva Eldar is using the wrong terminology. Doublespeak is language deliberately constructed to disguise or distort its actual meaning. This happens every day when certain euphemisms are used, like "war on terror". The word is not Orwellian in origin. But "doublethink" is much deeper and resides in one's brain, a true Orwellian construct. The Likud has perfected the ability to double think. Indeed, it became a "test" for membership in Likud. The aspiring candidate for membership had to look at the Occupation situation, observe the millions of resident Palestinians, and then was asked: "Do you believe that these areas belong to the Jews and will never be given up?" If he could answer "Yes" without seeing the demographic problem, he could become a Likudnik. A true doublethinker. Olmert is simply using the doublethink he developed in his many years in Likud.
