If this story is true - and I believe it (after all, there must be a mechanism for communication between neighbouring governments), Israelis didn't 'ask nice' but issued legitimate detailed threats in response - the only language Hamas understands. In other words, Israel simply communicated the cost to be inflicted on Hamas should settlers be kidnapped. Soldiers are one thing, citizens are another. Over the medium to long term, Israel realizes that Hamas will be the dominant voice of the Palestinian people; the time of Fatah is passing. Israel must foster a mechanism for Hamas political/Gaza to sever ties with Damascus. After Cast Lead, this became one step closer.
