The pressure from the U.S. is easy to resist. Bush could never enforce any sanction on Israel, no matter what Israel decides to do, because Congress would never allow it. It is therefore foolish for Israel to compromise on its own security needs. Israel could easily seal the border with Gaza and then drive the Palestinians from Judea and Samaria into Jordan once and for all. The EU would scream, the UN would condemn, the U.S. would sternly rebuke, and nothing would happen except that Israel's people would be safer. Israel would continue to receive financial and military assistance from the U.S. Time to do the right thing.
