There is hardly a peep of criticism from Livni, Mofaz and Kadima, the official opposition. There is hardly a condemnatory word from Barak or Labor. There is crowing and pleasure from the right's supporters, as they egg the regime on to act against universities, the courts, the army staff, the charities and pressure groups and who knows who will be next in their sights. There is a collective madness and vengefulness that sweeps through excessively nationalist regimes that are based on ethnicity, ideology or theocracy, or all 3 in Israel's case. It is reminiscent of the wide popular support for the Nazis, the Serb nationalists and similar unpleasant blots on the historical landscape. It looks to be the new face of Israel, a hard, cold and rather insane one, about as far as you can get from the principles and morals of Judaism. Think England and the other democracies need to start pumping more money into opposition groups in Israel, time for the silent majority to stand up and be counted, rather than being cowed and bullied by this rag-tag coalition of settler zealots, religious nuts and racist, nationalist political pygmies like Begin, Akunis, Kirschenbaum and Netanyahu.
