The law states that nutritionally comparable foods can be substituted. The article says (albeit as an afterthought) that the haredi schools have hired nutritionists to find foods that would be viable substitutes. So NO, they aren't asking for anything exceptional, they are working within the framework of the law. But the author of this article is jumping to point fingers at the haredi community, and so, it seems, are you. Very disappointing from fellow Jews.
