The occupation of the West Bank and Gaza is in its 45th year. US efforts, not always whole hearted, and mostly not even-handed, failed to bear fruit because israeli governments have taken advantage of US' less than stern demeanor. What's the point in continuing in the same failed path?. If not now, when?. How are more negotiations under the same set of circumstances going to succeed. Something got to give and now is the time to squeeze that government. At the least, the US should abstain. Once the vote goes through, the onus will be on the PLO/PA to show they can run a state in the making, efficiently, responsibly and in a manner that will bring about the creation of a new Palestinian state.
