For decades we are led to believe that the Gaza Strip is the planet?s most densely populated area. A few days ago I found the following table: Area Density of populationPersons per square mile Gaza 8666 District of Columbia 9176 Gibraltar 11,990 Singapore 17,751 Hong Kong 17,833 Monaco 41,608 Macao 71,466 Cairo 82,893 Calcutta 108,005 Manila 113,810 (Sources ? Statistical Abstract of the United States, 2004-2005, Tables 18 and 1321; Demographia -- Population Density: Selected International Urban Areas and Components ) Mainly, two facts can be learned from this list: Firstly, the claim that the Gaza Strip is earth?s most densely populated area is wrong. Secondly, the great density of population cannot be the cause of poverty und misery, when we find that wealthy Singapore, Hong Kong, Monaco and even Macao and Washington D.C. have a far greater density than the Gaza Strip. The three leading areas in this table, Cairo, Calcutta and Manila do have a density of population that is incomparably greater than anything known to the Palestinians and it?s people are living in a degree of poverty and misery that no inhabitant of the Gaza Strip (or the West Bank) would ever agree to change with.
