Syria is ruled by an Allawite (Shia) minority (15%) who repress any dissent and run a police state, where they hold all the key positions and levers of power. The opposition was initially from democratic opponents of the regime. Assad's military crack-down and arrest and killing of civilians from the Sunni majority is in danger of turning it into a Sunni-Shia civil war. Now the AQ types (Sunnis) are turning up to make it so. Assad and his Allawite generals still seem to think they can hang on to power by military repression, but their days must be numbered.
