The Palestinians don't just want a better functioning economy and greater wealth - they want their own state. The Palestinians don't just want greater respect for their human rights - they want their own state. The Palestinians don't want to become part of Jordan - they want their own state. Whatever Dayan is proposing it is based on two unworkable and interrelated ideas. First, that somehow the Palestinians can be bought off so that they will stop seeking their own state and secondly, it is Israel who will always be able to dictate the terms of the Israel-Palestinian relationship. Only someone who believes that the Palestinians lack the ability to influence events could think like this. Maybe Dayan could do worse and realise that in fact the Palestinians do have options because ultimately - if Israel refuses to do anything voluntarily - it is the international community which will ensure that the Palestinians do achieve statehood.
