It appears that many secular Israeli Jews hold to the trappings of religion for cultural reasons. Just like otherwise lapsed Roman Catholics may go to midnight mass at Christmas, give up chocolate for Lent etc. This has nothing to do with true religious feeling. People pick and choose those aspects of their religious background they feel comfortable with, which remind them of childhood, link them to a community, without being in any way truly religious. True believers, truly religious people do not pick and choose.
