I spent about 7 involuntary eight-week summers at sleep-away camp in the US, beginning at age 8, It certainly is good for developing a sense of attachment to Jewish culture (from the adults). It also teaches you the cruelty of groups, class differences, and emotional survival methods (unless you're one of the really popular kids who don't need this type of "finishing school"). Kind of a kosher "Lord of the Flies", without the wild pig, but with the sharpened stick.
