What does a political coward do if he desires to be a national leader? He deals with followers and opponents by misleading them, not by getting into confrontations. Two recent examples for Netanyahu's M.O: 1. He ran for the 2009 elections on a platform of "No Palestinian State, only Autonomy". some 4 months after the elections Yahu gave a speech accepting the two-states solution. Obviously, it was clear to him even before the elections that this policy was necessary, but he preferred to deceive his party and the public in order to win the elections. COST: Yahoo could not admit his fakery right away and therefore lost Kadima as a coalition partner. He had to form a hardline coalition which makes it harder to follow the new policy (which was never even brought before the Cabinet, Kneset, and Likud, for formal discussion).// 2. Some form of a construction freeze in the West Bank was obviously a necessary condition for peace talks. Even Bush's Roadmap included a freeze in the FIRST phase. This is basic. Having a harline coalition, the government decided that the freeze will last for only 10 months and will not be renewed! Was it conceivable that the talks will be concluded in only 10 months? Netanyahu of course has enough realism to understand this, but since he was dealing with his right wing partners, Lieberman and most of Likud members, he decided to deceive them for now, present a nicer picture and when the time comes he would try to wriggle out of it. Another act of leading by misleading. COST: Netanyahu has to pay a political price for cheating his followers, he offends his Labor partners who are already squeamish about the partnership, and exposes himself as a miserable weakling in front of the world.
