The reason conversion such a lengthy process in Israel is not because there is lots of red tape but because the only conversions recognised are Halachic one not the mickey mouse conversions that the non jewish russians went through so they would qualify under the law of return to make alliyah but once it says your jewish on paper they go back to their non Jewish lifestyle. What we do here though is abuse the system, if somebody non Jewish wants to emigrate to Israel then the basic law is convert and you can move to Israel which is an idea that makes a mockery of alliyah and the religion itself. We should have strict laws on what conversion processes are acceptable, who is Jewish and what is the immigration process for non Jews. Instead of having non jews convert just for the sake of legalities just set guidelines on criteria a non Jew would have to meet to come here. If they are professionals in fields we are short of like doctors or engineers, with refugees we will take X number each year and thats it, we will not just take anybody who enters illegally once we reach our quota we refuse to take them. We need to sort out conversion rules and stick to them and have rules on allowing non Jews to enter the country as non jews that way we get the people we want and we know who will qualify under the law of return based on conversions and who will not.
