Israel could try to befriend and shape the nascent Palestinian state, rather than resist and antagonize it. Maybe if Israel does not fight statehood at every turn, Fayyad and Abbas will be more amenable to delaying for an agreement, moderating or excluding Hamas, coordinating resource management and borders, and so forth. Israel would benefit by accepting the inevitability of a Palestinian state and nurturing it as a friendly neighbor. The last thing you need is to broadcast this message: "to be Israel's friend, you must be the Palestinians' enemy."
