Obviously Hezbollah's cross-border aggression started the ball rolling, but Israel could have chosen, as before to mount a limited retaliation to a limited incursion. That's what Nasrallah was expecting. Instead it chose to launch an all-out war, that it had pre-planned before, in order to punish the Lebanese people for allowing Hezbollah to operate on their territory. It was hugely disproportionate to the original offence, in the amount of damage it did to Lebanese civilian infrastrucire and the number of Lebanese civilians it killed and it started the drift towards international pariah status for Israel that Cast Lead accelerated. Frankly, Lebanon has every reason to feel nervous that Bibi's loser government will try to start a war to deflect attanetion from its failures, and Lebanon has every right to get ready to defend itself if that happens.
