There are a number of similarities between these two wars: 1. Wars started under false pretenses; WMD threat in Iraq, missile threat from Lebanon. (The missiles not very deadly and no existential threat.) 2. Both wars were seen (at least by US), falsely, as wars on international terror. Saddam had no such connection, while Hizballah is a LOCAL, not int'l anti-civilization threat. 3. Both wars seen (By US; Olmert not that stupid) as ways to establish democracy in Middle East. (Hard to do if the country falls into civil war.) 4. Both countries deeply divided among 3 major groups. Need a much softer approach. 5. Infrastructure in both countries almost entirely destroyed. (Unplanned consequence in Iraq, in Lebanon who knows.) 6. Invaders suffer many more losses than planned, and stay in much longer than planned. (Israel suck in a security strip.) 7. Invaders do not achieve their goals: Hardly a democracy in Iraq; Hizballah alive and kicking in Lebanon. 8. Iran is the main beneficiary in both wars. Saddam is gone, and Hizballah is seen as potent power by all. 9. Both wars start for Oedipal reasons: Bush and his Papa, Olmert wanting to be tougher than Sharon. It didn?t help that both leaders were novices. 10. Both wars destroy the reputations of the aggressors; Dumbya will be a historical joke, Olmert may soon find out.
