If Abbas goes direct to the Security Councill as he is in an election campaign Obama will have to use the veto. If he goes to the General Assembly he will get the numbers for a non binding resultion supporting the creation of this state but until it passes the Security Council it can't be made legal or be granted full UN membership. If Abbas goes to the UN he will basically be unilaterally declaring borders which Israel will not recognize and would not have accepted had there been talks. Israek will tell the palestinians and the UN to go to hell and on the ground nothing will change and we will have an intafada. If Israel says we support the creationg of a state but it has to be created as the result of negottaions the reply from the palestinian end will be there is nothing to talk about the UN has spoken. If the palestinian leaders did in future want to negotiate they couldn't because in the eyes of the ordinary palestinian on the street it doesn't matter about the loegalities if its just a General Assembly resolution they will say the UN gave us this and we will not let our leaders give up even 1 inch of it and as negotiations will rely on territorial concessions the palestinians would not be able to do a deal without looking like treachery. Talks or not Abbas is going to the UN in September and when that happens it will be the death blow to the peace process which nobody in Israel, the US or anybody else will be able to reserect.
