I think you are making the same mistake Mel Gibson made in his movie "Apocalypto", where the Indians are portrayed as savages who have to be saved by the colonials, who have a superior culture. In fact, according to an anthropologist, Mayan culture was advanced in many ways, science and math. Maybe if we get rid of our colonial way of thinking that our culture is superior to theirs, and we start to see the many advances their civilizations have made, will we be able to understand. Iran was not always under the rule of clerics; it was because of British colonization exploited, and people remained uneducated. People were educated under independence, which could lead to a reform movement; however, the clerics want to remain in power and want to kill the reform movement. For another example, look at the progress in India today. Let's hope the people and reform will win. I am sorry for all the people who have suffered under the present Iranian govt. My prayers go out to you.
