The only choices are not non-secular and oppressive governments. There is legitimacy to the point of view that where feasible, religion should be a private matter or a matter for consensual groups. Its not always feasible to ban religious symbols, for example Siks have every right to work but would be banned from public office if the Charter of Values were adopted. But there is nothing wrong with requiring that crucifixes or stars of David be tucked in behind a shirt of blouse. One needs balance.
