Having lived in Manhattan, LA, and the midwest, I know the Coens' 'shtetl' is correct. The reviewer defines Jewishness(in film) by New York and LA...while these locales may be much closer to an Israeli idea of jewishness than midwestern(or how about southern?)jews, they are atypical of American Jewry in general. So: why is it that Israeli Jews don't understand American Jews, or American Jews don't identify with Israel? Could it be the 'template' is misshapen?
