Anyone who had bothered to read the thought of one of the greatest Israeli novelists of the 20-21st century would have already known Yehoshua's views. He certainly expressed them in an interview pubished in English in David Grossman's book 10 or 15 years ago. Whether his position reflects some kind of widespread animosity or distancing of Israelis from Diaspora Jews, I don't know. I tend to doubt it. I think the relationship between Israeli and Diaspora Jes is classic co-dependence, in the most neurotic sense of the term: Israelis need Diaspora Jews to define themselves in all their chauvinistic glory and delusions of grandeur, and Diaspora Jews need Israelis as a surrogate for Jewish authenticity and -- of all things! -- spirituality. Diapora Jew love to be abused by our Old Testament/Hebrew-speaking daddy who fights our battles for us against the big bad Goyim. So don't worry, the more Yehoshua humiliates us, the more checks we will write to subsidize the abuse.
