In our prayers, we say "the People of Israel"? (referring to the Jews everywhere) and not the "religious community" of Israel. You can't deny thousands of years of Jewish tradition in which we are always a people. Moreover, Christians throughout the centuries recognized the Jews or "Hebrews" as a nation or people. It was not until Reform Judaism appeared in Germany in the 19th century that some Jews began to refer to themselves as a "religion" amd mot a people. However, Reform Judaism today no longer holds to this definition.
