The Rabbi qualifies with the critical phrase, "when no mercy should be shown" as in "if he shows mercy toward his enemy when no mercy should be shown." Wouldn't most reasonable people agree that when someone is on a mission, he should relentlessly pursue the goal?" Let's do less spinning and more talking to each other.
