And, I might add, Israel needs to understand that the most natural way for Americans to view the Israeli-Paletinian conflict is in terms of colonialism and apartheid. It doesn't matter if these tropes aren't really 'true' - Americans, having gone through their own civil rights movement, will apply this perspective to Israel. For Americans, the very notion of a state for a particular ethnic group is problematical.
