What's in a name? Technically, all citizens of Israel are Israelis, just as all citizens of Canada are Canadians, right? Yet somehow, it does not seem right to call the Arabs Israelis. No doubt it is because the Arabs of Israel have stayed in their ancestral home, they are not immigrants. They are the invaded natives, akin to the Hurons of Canada. My Palestinian friends who are from Israel refer to themselves as Palestinians. Yet they will not be living in a future state of Palestine, like the West Bankers, the Gazans and the refugees who choose to return from Lebanon, Jordan and other lands. They are determined to stay in their ancestral towns and villages. What then will they be called? Of course, the Jewish denizens of Israel would be delighted to escort each and every Arab out of Israel to join the fellow Palestinians in the future Palestine. Interesting possibilities.
