Peace with Abbas would accomplish three things. 1. it would allow many of the Arab nations surrounding Israel to actually work WITH Israel in opposing Iran. The Saudis and Egyptians and Jordanians fear Iranian hegemony nearly as much as Israel. 2. It would put immense pressure on Hamas. and 3. It would allow Israel to focus on only the Iranian proxies (Hisbollah and Hamas) without fear of invasion from across the Jordan. No, it would not stop Iran from achieving a bomb. Nothing will stop that now. But an Iranian bomb is not the end of Israel's world; far from it. What Israel should focus on is the time honored art of cold war. Line up your allies in a row, define clearly the terms under which nuclear annihilation will occur, make clear that Israel has the power to wipe the entirety of Persian culture off the map, and then sit back and let the game play itself out over time. Someday even Iran will be tired of playing it, and their own internal collapse will happen no matter what. Then you can talk disarmament. I do not believe for a moment that Israel will be in any actual existential danger; however, a nuclear-armed Iran might be.
