Chris, protracted operations against Hizbollah failed over a decade. Thus you are probably right. A political 'deal' with Hizbollah had limited, but significant success for 6 years. Israel's problem right now is that operations against Hizbollah have failed to achieve dramatic results fast. A complication is that the decision to attack all of Lebanon brought world attention which a limited attack against Hizbollah's army would not have. The problems now are several. First, Israel needs to push far enough into Lebanon to prevent rocket launchings against Israeli civilians. Second, Israel must hold that turf. Third, it must deal with the immense international damage done by the decision to make war against Lebanon instead of just Hizbollah. Olmert has proven his incompetence. Israel is in trouble.
