Instead of turning the Palestinian UN bid into a negative, Israel should seek US backing for a resolution that recognizes Palestine and admits it as a member state to the U.N. as a democratic state living in peace with Israel and simultaneously reaffirms Israel's right to exist with security and freedom from terrorist attacks and as a Jewish state that respects the rights of all its citizens and offers them equal protection under the law and does not impose any religious practices on any of its citizens. This approach would be hard for many UN states to reject and would tie Israel's and Palestine's fate together in international law just as it is de facto in the real world. Recognition of Palestine in this way would be the first step toward a new policy of generosity on the part of Israel that could provide a breakthrough toward meaningful negotiations for peace on terms acceptable to both sides (I outline those in my forthcoming book Embracing Israel/Palestine). If this strategy makes any sense to you, please go to www.tikkun.org and sign the petition calling on UN member states to recognize Palestine and reaffirm Israel's right to security!
