Rabbi S is correct when he pleas for us to protect the innocent from false accusations. But neither he nor Rabbi Lamm investigated the claims brought to them, they never interviewed the accused, and they did not report to authorities. They and other religious leaders simply shooed the children, aside and at best let abusers quietly resign and slip out of town. Prosecution and sentencing for failing to report must be severe and exoteric for perpetrators, enablers and accessories. The pharisaic act is not in the reporting, but in the silence. We need organizations like Magen in Bet Shemesh Israel with the resources to take reports, investigate, meet with community leaders, and refer for appropriate action---AND give aid and comfort to the victims (not something high on the agenda of religious school leaders).Israel, by the way, has an unsavory international reputation for protecting accused abusers who fled from other countries, rather than extraditing them.
