Kemalism embraced Islam, but subduing it to the state's legal system: Turkey has its own ministry of religious affairs, of Turkish islam. Fazil Say, one of whose concerts I visited last week-end, has been condamned for some tweets which seem rather harmless in my eyes. To sum it up: Turkish secularism seems rather a farce to me. But the power of the Turkish army actually seems no farce to me and is no less worrisome. But I agree that Barak Ravid's comment here is less diplomatic than I would have liked it to be. Foreign politics in the middle eastern region sometimes already appear like mud-wrestling, thus weekening diplomacy vis-à-vis armed organisms. To my eyes, Lieberman and Erdogan are outstanding examples of this, no need to take them as idols.
