was imprisoned before Hitler for "whistle-blowing" the Reichswehr's (German army) secret rearmament. Retaken under Hitler to a KZ he was infected with tuberculosis. At the time he received the Nobel prize he had been released to a special hospital. It is doubtful whether he would have been able to travel to Oslo but the national socialists forbade it as a precaution. He died in 1938.
