The US, on the one hand must placate Israel, due to the zionist lobby in the US while at the same time playing up to the Saudis as the only realistic buffer to Shi'ite ascendency in the region. The Saudi plan is gaining currency. But lets look at Israel's position. Let's look at the recent statement concerning the colonies that came out of Israel's man of peace, Shimon Peres who claims Israel is likely willing to give up colonies but not all or even most of its colonies. Israel will not discuss the status of East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine. Israel is not willing to discuss the refugee question-period, nor is it willing to return to the pre-'67 borders or a mutually agreed upon, equitable land exchange. So what is left of the Saudi proposal? An offer by Israel of a series of disjointed bantustans with autonomy but external control still in the hands of Israel. olmert has neither the power nor the inclination to offer anything beyond a slice of swiss cheese.
