Rabbi Dorsch seems to think the lack of democracy one year after the Arab Spring is a sign of failure. Yet our own tradition teaches that emerging from slavery and building a free society is a long process. Recall that our own emergence from slavery took 40 years in the desert and countless rebellions. Rather than writing the epitaph of the Arab Spring, we should be calling for every effort to support the forces of freedom and democracy in those societies, while at the same time calling for greater equality and freedom of speech and an end to discrimination in Israel, a society we are so eager to uphold as a beacon of freedom.
