This is an outstanding editorial, a vivid restatement of humanistic principle in an age of chauvinistic darkness on all sides. Of course, in issuing such an Independence Day message, Bradley is putting another target on his back. If only people would listen to him. Israel does not need the West Bank. The occupation only keeps the "demographic problem" alive. If Israel allowed a real Palestinian state to be born, it could still take every needed measure for its security. The people who argue that Israel is illegitimate would not gain much of a hearing. The withdrawal from Gaza does not prove that giving up territory does not make Israel any safer; because that left the occupation intact. The thing that enrages people was still there. Israel has the power to end the conflict for virtually everyone, despite the few who would remain irreconcilable on both sides. All that is lacking is leadership with the will to do it. The time to act is now, before Abbas and Fayyad fade from the scene
