Because when American Jewish youth travel to Israel on a Birthright trip, they get to see the "real" Israel. I'm sure everyday Israelis climb Masada on the weekends, or venture into the desert with the Bedouin to make bread, or have bodyguards surround them 24/7. The Birthright trips provide no insight into the "real" Israel, including mixed Arab-Jewish cities, settlement trips, or visiting the West Bank villages and speaking directly with Arabs about their experiences. Kudos to these youths for being brave enough to speak out to their cousins on the other side of the pond.
