The bold intellectual step that President Sarkozy and President Obama must take, is to accept that peace is not contingent upon Israel giving up territory in east Jerusalem or anywhere else. The withdrawal from Gaza Strip, after enormous international pressure on Ariel Sharon, clearly demonstrates that the only peace plan that Israel's regional enemies have, is peace via the expulsion of all the Jews in the region and the elimination of Israel. Therefore, if peace can be achieved via international pressure, all aid to the Palestinians must be halted, and all of the regional actors beyond Israel's borders, must accept the state of Israel, and normalise international relations with Israel including free trade and over-flight rights. After that has been done, Israeli democracy will take care of the outstanding matters, since there would be confidence to do so.
