There was a time when the concept of Israel captured the imagination of the world. The old Zionism envisioned a land for Jews living peacefully and in harmony with its neighbors. Even Ben Gurion recognized Israel would be judged by how it treats the Arabs. Whatever gains were made have been obliterated by an unrelenting occupation. Entrenchment of a settler zealotry has propagated hostilities. Resultant fears have allowed leaders to exploit the very people historically committed to truth and justice. Obsessive security has driven these people to allow the the very injustices that they and their fathers abhorred in prior generations. Israel is at a crises because its leadership have lost their connection with our roots. They have adopted a new religion which has sacrficed our values of tolerance, truth, justice, the bonds between all Jews and the very foundations of the western Judeo-Christian traditions. No wonder that Israel is on the path of alienation and perhaps even self-destruction.
