Sensible leaders will abandon it if the price they have to pay for it exceeds the benefits they get out of it. It is a very delicate balance with one huge unknown that will upset the benefit versus cost equation and that is the sentiment of the people. If he majority of the people believe that the peace treaty is a detriment to them, then any democratically elected government will abide by the will of the people, or as in the case of any democracy, will be voted out of office.
