There is no way that Abu Mazen can win right now head to head military struggle against Hamas. He could do so only if he had the backing of a large majority of his population. he'll never have that kind of backing as long as his consituency doesn't see the Israeli government and Israeli military exert some contol over the settlers, especially the more radical elements. The Palestinian believe, with a great deal of justification, that it is the settlers who call the shots, control the Israeli body politics and are more powerful than the politicians with whom the Palestinians negotiate and reach agreements. It seems like Ariel Sharon himself is not sure at all that he can actually win a confrontation with the radical settlers and force them to abide by his government's decisions.
