This time, let me just explain Sharansky (even to himself): The more US Jews divest from Israel, the more Israel becomes central to American Jewry's survival, but this is an "optical illusion" effect. As US Jews are detaching themselves from Israel and assimilate, the more religious the still attached Jew is (on average), because religious Jews cannot detach from Israel. Eventually, the attached will be the religious, and the rest will slowly assimilate. Nothing to brag about.
