Whether Barghouti will ever see the light of day outside of prison nobody really knows. I don't doubt he is guilty of ordering a terrorist attack on Israeli civilians. What I can't abide, however, is the utter hypocrisy of so many of my fellow Israelis who seem to have thrown the history of the founding of Israel down the memory hole. Both Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir during pre-state days were terrorists who killed hundreds of Palestinian civilians during the chaotic and terrible days of the post-Partition-vote civil war between the Yishuv and the Palestine Arabs, in which Palestinians carried out their share of massacres and terror attacks. We won that civil war and subsequent invasion by Arab states, which in both cases the Arab side started to annihilate us. The Arab side paid the price of its aggression and but that doesn’t stop them from blaming the loss of their gamble to destroy us as an “Israeli aggression.” Sadly too many have bought into this Palestinian nationalist mythology. Yet, let's not forget that our own side produced terrorists who killed civilians, and these two fellows went on to become Prime Ministers of Israel. Perhaps Barghouti will follow Begin's and Shamir's footsteps and become a president of some future State of Palestine? If so, we should not protest too loudly or we may be called out on our hypocrisy. And rightly so.
