According to Barak, once Iran can transfer her Uranium enrichment activity to her under-the-mountain facility, it will be free to produce a bomb and will do so (he predicts). Therefore, he says, bomb the existing facility at Natanz NOW. But what good would this do? Iran produces her own centrifuges and in short order will install them under the mountain, instead of transfering old ones from Natanz. So what is the gain, a delay of one year? The gain of bombing is trivial, while the cost will be enormous: Missile attack on Israel, attack on US bases in the Gulf which will turn the US public against Israel, and gaining a suicidal enemy for many years to come. In addition, Iran will no doubt quit the NPT and start producing nuclear weapons as defense against Israel. This stupid view of Barak cries to the heavens, except that Barak is actually very smart and far from being "stupid". One has to consider that Barak has a personal motive to bomb Iran. He and his party are expected to be eliminated from the Knesset in the next elections. Perhaps Barak believes that only a strike on Iran will change people's minds and save him politically. Wishful thinking at best, but very dangerous.

Why Barak regrets speaking out on Iran

There was no security breach in what the former defense minister said about how an attack was thwarted; what has suffered is mainly Israel’s image.
