Barak's statement today is of course positive. Better not provoke the US into another round of pressure on Israel. But I wouldn't go as far as calling Barak the "responsible adult" in our government of disorderly juveniles. His own modus operandi is to refrain from action in an area he is directly responsible for: law and order in the West Bank. How many years has he delayed carrying out Supreme Court orders to evacuate illegal settlements? How much law and order behavior does he impose on the crazy settlers? Lucky for Barak that the US (and the Palestinians) do not demand that the illegal settlements be evacuated as talks begin. This step was supposed to be carried out in the first phase of the "roadmap", and committed to by Sharon.
