Milosevic was a strongman of the Republic of Serbia which was an important part of the former Yugoslavia during 1990’s when Europe was widely opening its gates to Yugoslavia to join the EU, an offer supported by strong financial package to help yugoslavia economic restructuring. Instead, Milosevic has opted for strong nationalist card, enthusiastically supported by profoundly anti-Semitic Serbian Ortodox Church and extreme “traditional” nationalists’ strongly anti-western circles that amongst other had the history of collaborating with German occupiers during WWII, thus rejecting an offer to share his enormous political power with existing pro-western oriented secular political forces in Serbia. After Serbia initiated and lost several aggressive wars whose aim was creation of 'Great Serbia' through committed crimes and genocidal ethnic “cleansing”, Yugoslavia disintegrated; Serbia lost Kosovo, while militant Serb nationalists and Church have rejected once mighty Milosevic who finished his line of business in Hague as an accused war criminal. In my humble opinion, this story says it is much better NOT to share power with those who are even more ‘patriotic’ and ‘traditional’ than you are. They will use you and then they will discard you when appropriate.
