    The Balfour letter of 1917 committed the British government to do no more than ‘view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people’ - but only as long as this did not ‘prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine’. I never cease to be amazed that the second half of this "declaraion", which effectively negates the first, is blithly ignored by those who find it convenient to do so.
