It's disgusting to read Uri Avnery being bashed on completely unfounded grounds. Fact is, that Avnery has fought (by arms) first for Israel to be established and then (by words) every second of the rest of his life for a Palestinian state to be erected alongside Israel. He has always argued for Israel to reach out to the Arab world and get accepted as a Semitic state among the other Semitic states of the region. All along his life his ideas have been rejected by the wast majority of Israelis who preferred Israel to be a European colonialist and expansionist state and look upon the rest of the region with disdain. He has always been a man of dialogue and was always received warmly by "the other side". He also from a very early moment realized the terrible injustice that had been done to the Palestinians and never tried to deny the terrible crimes committed by the nascent Jewish state. The terrible state of affairs we have now has a lot to do with his generation's denial and the whitewash of history. If Israelis would have listened to men like him rather than to their war-mongering political and military leaders, there would have been peace long time ago. And just so you know, last weekend his wife and life-long companion Rachel died. So I suggest we all pay the man respect instead of besmirching his name!
