Assad Jr. has made a strategic calculation. He figures that Israel is too strong... to be taken on alone. So in order to make Israel recapitulate... and return the Golan Heights. Assad’s strategy is to supply military hardware and advance missiles to Hezbollah. Provide Hamas a home for insurgency and to militarily align with Tehran. This three-prong-effort... he believes, will insure the pressure on the Israelis to a negotiated settlement. On the surface, this simplistic idea looks beneficial. But what he overlooks however... is that all this is fraught with danger. Enabling Hamas, doesn’t bring Fatah and Hamas into re-alignment. Clandestine transfer of weapons to Hezbollah in reality destabilizes Lebanon. And Iran... well let’s just say, they march to their own drummer. Then of course, the crux of the problem is... the perceived threat Israel sees from this strategy. As an example, recent reports were circulated that the Israelis were on the verge of a military strike in the Bekka valley. Going after secret missile convoys headed to Hezbollah. It is said, the Israelis were asked by important US officials... not to go ahead with the strike. This time the operation, as well as the escalation was curtailed. But I wonder if the Syrians realize they are playing with fire. And even unattended matches in the Middle East... tends to scorch the landscape.
