Assad has never been sincere about peace, the only thing he is sincere about it he wants the Golan & a share of Kineret water. He is not even offering a full peace for these things more like some kind of ceasefire type thing and there will be no exchange of ambassadors, its certainly not going to be anything like what we got with Egypt and Jordan. Under Israeli law legally the Golan & Jerusalem are just as much Israeli territory as Tel Aviv. Currently all it takes is 61 out of 120 MKS to say give it up and its gone. Any government usually basing its policies on holding the coalition together can deicide give it up even if the rest of the country was against it. The bill is a farce anyway in the way its drawn up and may even make it easier for a government to give up land. The new bill says it will require 80 out of 120 MKs to chose to give it up without holding a referendum rather than the current 61. If the government doesn't have that 80 votes then they get to chose what to do next either have a referendum or hold a general election so this whole bill is open to abuse in its current form but considering the legal status of the Golan it cant be right that it only takes 1 more MK in favor than against to make such a major decision. The financial cost alone we would be paying off for a decade or more, there is the security issue, water, most Druze who live in the Golan don't want to live under Syrian law and they would probably all come running to the Israeli government asking for citizenship and homes in Israel and there are also around another 30,000 of them. It would be a nightmare for Israel and we wouldn't really gain anything out of it other than Assads signature and a Nobel Prize to boost the ego of the Israeli PM, Assad and the US president who acted as a middle man. Israel NEEDS the Golan but it does NOT need a treaty with Syria and the government is supposed to base policy on whats best for Israels interests not get a treaty for the sake of having a treaty. Sometimes war without fighting like we have now and the land is better than a treaty we don't need and pay a heavy price for it.
